North Korea stages new ‘very important’ test at long-range rocket site

North Korea staged a new nuclear test at the country’s long-range rocket site.

The exact nature of the test is unclear, but could be related to the nation’s intercontinental ballistic missile program. North Korean authorities described the test at the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground as a “very important” advancement.

The development comes as historic peace talks between the U.S. and North Korea have stalled. President Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un have met twice in an effort to strike a deal.

The United States has long sought to convince North Korea to give up their nuclear weapons, while Kim is hoping to ease crippling sanctions which have been imposed on his country.

“We watch closely as do South Korea and Japan … the State Department is trying to get them to the table, because the only way forward is through a diplomatic and political agreement,” U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper told Reuters. “[North Korea is] are still doing training, they do short-range ballistic missile tests that we are also concerned about.”
