VLADIMIR PUTIN'S popularity is dwindling in Russia as he faces outrage from citizens over his handling of the coronavirus crisis.

Russia has been devasted by the coronavirus disease and citizens have begun to lose faith in Russian President, Vladimir Putin, according to a new survey. Analysis conducted by the independent pollster, the Levada Centre revealed in May that only 59 percent of Russians approve of Mr Putin's actions. BBC Russian correspondent Steve Rosenberg spoke to citizens in Russia to find out why the President's popularity had fallen to its lowest in twenty years.

Mr Rosenberg said: "Political leaders from around the world are struggling with the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

"According to one recent survey in Russia, President Putin's approval rating has fallen to its lowest level in twenty years."

"What do people think of Vladimir Putin in his home city of St Petersburg."

Mr Rosenberg then spoke to a florist and asked for their thoughts on the Russian President's handling of coronavirus.

The florist Milana said: "I was a flower seller and my husband drove tourists around.

"These are the kind of jobs that have been hardest hit.

"People like me have been abandoned, we've been left alone to struggle."

She added the state support was not sufficient to provide for her and her family.

Milana also explained why she stopped watching the state TV and had doubts about the leadership of Mr Putin.

She said: "I don't watch state TV, I used to and I truly believed what they said on there.

"But I don't believe a single word anymore.

"The only place I get news from now is the internet."

"I wanted to trust Vladimir Putin but I don't trust him any more."

At the time of writing, according to Johns Hopkins University's data, Russia has the third-highest number of coronavirus cases in the world.

The total number of cases is 449,256 and of this number, 5,520 people have died.
