If one thing is making a comeback during the coronavirus pandemic, it’s drive in movie theaters.
After getting the go-ahead from the New Mexico Governor last week, starting Friday, Allen Theaters in Las Cruces will begin to host their first drive in movies in decades.
“There’s not many drive-ins around anymore, so we’re happy to do it,” Russell Allen, the president of Allen Theaters said.
While the coronavirus has kept indoor movie theaters closed, Allen was able to bring his staff back to work on Friday, as they prepared to take the community back in time, for a drive in movie.
“We’ve just been waiting for the governor to make some sort of announcement to allow it to happen, and when she made the announcement that drive-ins could open, is when we went ahead and pulled the trigger,” Allen said.
For opening night on Friday, the line up is Jurassic World and Superbad.
For the rest of the weekend, you can see the movies to be shown in the image below:
Here’s how it will work:
- Vehicles will enter through the backside of the theater on Del Rey Blvd, where they’ll purchase their tickets, which are $20 per vehicle.
- Only 100 vehicles will be allowed in per showing.
- The gates will open nightly at 7:30, with double features on Fridays and Saturdays.
- The film will start when the sun goes down.
- Each vehicle will be guided to the parking lot, where an empty space will remain between them.
- If you’re attending, be sure to turn your radio to 100.3 FM to hear the movie.
“Movies are medicine for the soul and this is an opportunity to get out into a fantasy world and to be able to watch a movie that can make you scared, cry or happy, and not think about what real life is for a couple hours,” Allen said.
The theaters snack bar and restrooms will be open to the public. Allen said social distancing will be practiced at all times.
