Man fatally shot at foodservice plant in Conyers, Georgia; suspect arrested at bus station
Police were searching for the motive behind a fatal shooting Friday at a foodservice plant in Conyers, Georgia, about 25 miles southeast of Atlanta.
A gunman entered Dart Container Corp. plant around 7 a.m. and shot an employee, Rockdale County Sheriff Eric Levett said at a press conference.
Police responded to the scene within three minutes and took the victim to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries, the sheriff said. The victim, Tarus Andrews, was an employee in 40s.
The suspect fled the area but was later arrested at a Greyhound bus station in Birmingham, Alabama, about 170 miles from the scene of the shooting. The suspect, Camron Golden, was a temporary employee at Dart Corp. and has been charged with murder, Levett said.
It was not immediately clear if Golden had targeted Andrews, what weapon he had used, or how many rounds he had fired, Levett said.
"We don’t know why Mr. Golden began firing inside Dart Container. That is still an active investigation," Levett said.
The incident was being investigated as workplace violence and was not an active shooter situation, the sheriff said.
The building was evacuated and the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office asked the community to stay away from the area.
"Counseling support will be available to our Conyers employees and we will support the affected employee and family throughout this tragic event. The facility will remain closed until further notice," Dart Corp. said in a statement.
About 300 employees work at the plant, the company said. Based in Michigan, Dart Corp. makes food and beverage packaging products, including the Solo cup brand.
Several nearby county schools and the county courthouse were locked down due to the police activity, according to officials. All Rockdale County Public Schools students and staff were safe, and no visitors were allowed on the campuses, the district said on Facebook.
