Nation remembers Sushma Swaraj; PM Narendra Modi calls her 'articulate voice for India at the world stage'

Senior BJP leaders, politicians across parties fondly remembered Sushma Swaraj on her first death anniversary today.

New Delhi: Tributes poured in for former external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, on her first death anniversary today.

Remembering one of the stalwarts of the BJP, her husband Swaraj Kaushal and daughter Bansuri wrote touching messages on Twitter today. From Union Ministers, senior BJP leaders and politicians across the parties fondly remembered Swaraj.

During her tenure as the EAM, Swaraj gained quite a following on Twitter for reaching out to people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "She served India selflessly and was an articulate voice for India at the world stage." 

'An epitome of Indian culture'

The nation was in shock after her sudden death at 67 last year due to heart attack.

Paying his tribute Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu said, “Sushma Ji was seen as an epitome of Indian culture. She was a blend of modern thinking and traditional values. She was always respectful towards seniors and elders. She was one of the most affable Indian politicians and treated everybody with warmth and affection.”

Syed Akbaruddin, former India’s permanent representative at the United Nations at New York, also remembered Sushma.

“Remembering  Sushma Swaraj! A leader who promoted India’s interests indefatigably,” he tweeted.

Dharmendra Pradhan said, “Humble tributes to one of the tallest women leaders in India and much-loved Smt. Sushma Swaraj ji on her death anniversary. A people’s person, she devoted her entire life to public service. She will always be remembered for her unparalleled contribution towards the nation.”

'Krishna, remember my mother'

Quoting the former EAM, BJP’s Jay Panda quoted said, “Reform must begin today; tomorrow could be too late” adding that “she continues to inspire millions.”

Union Harsimrat Kaur Badal called her a powerful orator and “a motherly figure and role model to many.”

Remembering her predecessor, EAM Dr S Jaishankar shared a collage of pictures. "Today, more than ever, remember her fondly. Always an inspiration," Dr Jaishankar tweeted.
