Washington, D.C. – In a bizarre incident in the final minutes of Syracuse’s loss to Georgetown on Saturday, Orange guard Jalen Carey, who is out after recently undergoing surgery on his thumb, was ejected from the game.
Carey appeared to trip Georgetown’s Terrell Allen, who had fallen into Syracuse’s bench after trying to defend Buddy Boeheim on a 3-point shot taken on the sideline.
The referees stopped the game and went to the video replay monitor at the scorer’s table. After reviewing the play, Carey was ejected. He spent the rest of the game in the visitor’s locker room.
“I don’t know what happened,’’ Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. “I didn’t see anything. I don’t know what happened there.’’
Carey was not available for comment after the game.
The play didn’t impact the outcome of the game. Boeheim’s 3-pointer narrowed Georgetown’s lead to 77-68 with 3:53 to go in the game. The Hoyas went on to win 89-79.
The officials decided to eject Carey, but they didn’t issue any technical fouls.
“(The official) said he wanted to make sure nothing escalated,’’ Georgetown coach Patrick Ewing said. “I saw Terrell got angry when he went into their bench. I didn’t see what happened.’’
Buddy Boeheim initially thought the referees were going to assess a foul on Allen.
“He kicked me a little (and) tried tripping me, putting his hip into me. I just shot it after he flew by," Buddy Boeheim said. "(Our) bench was saying, ‘He tripped him.’ Allen turned around and said something to the bench. I was just trying to get the ref’s attention and see on the replay if he turned around and kicked me again. He initially kicked me.’’
Jim Boeheim, Buddy Boeheim and SU assistant coach Gerry McNamara all were talking to one official while the other two referees viewed the replay.
“I think they looked at how Jalen reacted instead of how the Georgetown player initiated it,’’ Buddy Boeheim said. “He definitely said something to the bench and started it.’’
Carey is the first Syracuse player ejected from a game since Kristof Ongenaet against Georgetown on Feb. 14, 2009. He was ejected for throwing a flagrant elbow.
