October 22, 2019 – Santa Fe College is gearing up for the annual United Way fundraising campaign. All funds go to the United Way of North Central Florida and all proceeds stay in the community.

Starting next week, SF employees will be receiving donation forms for payroll deductions. If you sign up for a payroll deduction, it will start with your January 15, 2020 paycheck. Any employee who makes a contribution of at least $24 (or $1 per pay period) will be automatically entered into a drawing to win an iPad. Even if you do not want to make a contribution, you can enter to win the iPad by going to Cheryl Farrell’s office in Building F, Room 249 and completing an entry form.

As the college has done in years past, there will also be an opportunity to win a Solano Scooter, this year valued at $1200. Bids for the scooter can be made at the visitor information desk inside the Administration Building (Building F). There will also be opportunities to make bids on the scooter when it is displayed outside the SF Bookstore, or at the Lawrence W. Tyree Library.

The SF Bookstore and Coffee 101 are also getting into the fundraising spirit by doing a round-up for United Way. Anytime you make a purchase at the bookstore or Coffee 101, you will have the opportunity to round-up your bill to the next whole dollar (a $3.77 would be rounded up to $4, a $7.45 would be rounded up to $8, etc.).

This year, we will continue the tradition of Penny Wars! For those of you who are not aware, Penny Wars is the competition held between SF students and SF staff. Across the Northwest Campus, there will be collection jars set up for both students and staff to contribute. The student jars will have a picture of student body president Kate Santacruz. Staff are represented by associate director of Student Life, Doug Bagby. Penny Wars will run for about four weeks, and once completed, the money will be added up. If the students end up with more points than staff, Dr. Bagby will get a pie in the face courtesy of Student Body President Santacruz. If the staff gets more points than the students, it will be Student Body President Santacruz getting pied by Dr. Bagby.

The rules to Penny Wars are simple – coins add to your team’s score and paper money deducts points from your score as listed below:

  • Penny = 1 point
  • Nickel = 5 points
  • Dime = 10 points
  • Quarter = 25 points
  • Dollar = -100 points
  • $5 = -500 points
  • $10 = -1000 points
  • $20 = – 2000 points

So make a payroll deduction, round up your tab at Coffee 101, bid on that Solano scooter or participate in Penny Wars (or do several of them) and help support our local community through the United Way of North Central Florida.
