Return of the Jedi: Ewan McGregor to reprise role as Obi-Wan Kenobi

Ewan McGregor is returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a new Star Wars series for Disney's upcoming streaming platform.

The Scottish actor announced the news to fans at Disney's D23 Expo convention on Friday, saying: "It's been four years of saying 'well, I don't know'.

"Now I can say 'yes, we're going to do it'."

McGregor played the younger version of the Jedi master in the three prequel movies, beginning with The Phantom Menace in 1999.

The scripts are being worked on and filming starts next year, according to Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy.

Disney+ has also released the official trailer for The Mandalorian, Disney+'s live-action Star Wars series about the planet Mandalore.

The series is set after Return Of The Jedi and it follows a bounty hunter - the Mandalorian - as he travels through the lawless world on a dangerous mission.

Hilary Duff is also going to reprise her first major role, Lizzie McGuire, on the streaming service.

The original series, which ran between 2001 and 2004, was about a teenager who dreamed of being popular at school - and the sequel will see Lizzie as a 30-year-old living in New York.

Duff said on Instagram: "I've been trying to contain this excitement for a long time while this has been in the works!

"I am beyond excited to be home again, back with my girl."

Disney is set to launch its streaming service on 12 November in the US, with an offering it hopes will rival the likes of Netflix.

Disney expects between 60 million and 90 million subscribers by the end of the 2024 financial year, which is also when it expects the service to start making a profit.

Disney+ is expected to be available in all major regions of the world within the next two years.

Other offerings include a Muppets series, Christmas films, nature programmes and superhero films from Marvel Studios.
