SPOKANE, Wash. (KSNV) — The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Washington announced on Wednesday, 36-year-old Matthew David Carter of Las Vegas was sentenced for his role in an apparent accident scheme.

Information disclosed during court proceedings revealed that Carter was involved in two fake automobile accidents in Las Vegas and defrauded insurance companies out of $568,744.
During the accidents, Carter played an "injured victim" in one case and allowed his BMW vehicle to be used as the "at fault" in another case.
“Staged accident automobile insurance fraud is not a victimless crime. It affects every driver, as fraud causes insurance rates to increase," said U.S. Attorney William D. Hyslop.
District Judge Thomas O. Rice sentenced Carter to 12 months and one day of prison He also was sentenced to three years of court supervision, a restitution payment of $50,500 and forfeiture of $50,500.
