Police took a man into custody early Monday morning after a barricade situation that started Sunday night at an apartment in the central Las Vegas valley.

The incident began when a patrol officer tried to stop two men for a traffic violation around 10:50 p.m. Sunday in the area of Van Patten Street and Sahara Avenue, said Lt. David Gordon.

A patrol officer spoke with them while they were on the second-floor landing of an apartment complex, Gordon said.

One of the men turned away and pushed his way into an apartment, during which his shirt lifted up and the officer could see the handle of a handgun.

A man and woman left the apartment and told police they "know the suspect vaguely, but did not invite him over or grant him permission to enter their apartment this evening," Gordon said.

Police tried to get the suspect to leave, and SWAT was eventually called while officers spoke with residents in the complex, who had the option to take shelter at a nearby school.

Ten people evacuated while others chose to shelter in place, according to Gordon. The suspect was eventually taken into custody around 3:50 a.m., he said.
