The American Red Cross extended its call to donors for all blood types Monday, Jan. 20, to give blood, especially those with type O blood.

The shortage at Red Cross, which says it supplies 40 percent of the nation’s blood, is at least I part due to the rise in flu cases across the U.S. as well as the winter weather and storms inevitably canceling blood drives.

As of Monday, the Red Cross says that it has less than a three-day supply of type O blood available.

Type O negative blood, which can be transfused to patients with any blood type, is vital since emergency patients often need immediate transfusions with no time for medical staff to determine their blood type.

Type O positive blood is the most used blood type as it can be given to Rh-positive patients (meaning that antigens are present on the surface of the patient’s red blood cells) of any blood type.

While type O is especially significant, donors of all blood types are urged to give. Those interested can visit the Red Cross website or call 1-800-733-2767.
