COVID-19: Stranded students from Arunachal Pradesh leave Shillong in buses

GUWAHATI: With the countrywide lockdown in place students from Northeast who are in other states are facing difficulties. In a latest development 250 students from Arunachal Pradesh stranded in Meghalaya have left Shillong in 9 buses and will be reaching their home state later today. The arrangements for their travel were provided by the Arunachal Pradesh government.

Nabam Khoda, President of the Arunachal Students Union, Shillong, told Northeast Live that over 520 students are stranded in Shillong and 250 students will be reaching Arunachal Pradesh later today, while the remaining will be brought back later.

Out of the 9 buses, 4 are allocated for Itanagar, 2 for Ruksin and one each for Namsai, Shantipur and Bhalukpong.

The authorities have also given strict regulations to fill up only 50 percent of the buses so as to maintain the norms of social distancing. Hence, the 50 seat capacity buses will be transporting only 25 students.

Earlier, the Arunachal Pradesh government had released about Rs. 5.20 crore for over 14,000 Arunachali residents stranded outside the state in other parts of India due to the lockdown. From this released amount each stranded Arunachali was to receive Rs. 3500 as one-time, state financial assistance.

Arunachal Pradesh had a lone COVID-19 patient in April who has recovered and now the state is COVID-19 free.

The 31-year old male patient had tested negative after a third throat swab test was conducted at the Lahowal based ICMR testing lab in Eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh district. The person is a resident of Tezu, Lohit district. He had attended the Tablighi Jamaat even at Nizamuddin Markaz, New Delhi.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu through his official twitter handle had informed the news.

“The first Positive case of Arunachal has tested Negative today after conducting 3rd test. He was kept in isolation for 13 days under observation of doctors. Repeat sample is being collected today again,” Arunachal CM Pema Khandu tweeted.
