Newcastle United midfielder Jack Colback has opened the door to a summer exit after admitting that he doesn’t see his future being at the club.

The 29-year-old has enjoyed a fine season on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Championship, and it doesn’t appear as if he will be wearing black and white again any time soon.

“I’ve not spoken to either club,” he said, as per The Chronicle’s news and transfer centre [21/04; 10:32]. “This time of the season, teams just want to get the season finished.

“Then you can go away, have a little break, then reassess it. That’s what I’ll do. I’ll go away. I don’t see my future at Newcastle. I’ve not played there for a good two years now. The manager there made it clear I wasn’t in his plans at that time, and that’s not going to change. For me, it’s just about finishing this season as well as we can, taking a break from it all and reassess come pre-season.”

OPINION

Colback certainly seems to be aware of the fact that in all likelihood he will never play competitively again for his boyhood club. He’s had quite a fall from grace having been brave enough to cross the Tyne-Wear divide several years ago. Snaring him was looked upon as an excellent achievement by the Magies at the time, but now he seemingly has no future at St James’ Park. To be fair to manager Rafael Benitez, why would be consider Colback moving forward? He’s been doing well in the Championship, but he never pulled up any trees during his time at Newcastle. Besides, the Spaniard has plenty of quality centre midfielders to choose from. Colback will, most likely, end up back at Forest next season, although hopefully on a permanent deal this time. From there he can continue to rebuild his career after going stagnant on Tyneside for a while. It seems like a solution that would benefit all parties.
