Aaron Boone: Umpire showed more ‘class than I did’ during rant

Aaron Boone wasn’t in the dugout for the Yankees’ 8-2 win over the Rockies on Friday night, as he served a one-game suspension handed down for his profanity-laced tirade during Thursday’s win in the first game of their doubleheader sweep of the Rays in The Bronx.

But the manager made sure to reach out to rookie umpire Brennan Miller, who drew Boone’s wrath Thursday.

“I called him [Friday] morning,’’ Boone told The Post. “We had a good conversation. I told him he handled himself well and called a good game. I said someday we might laugh about this.”

Boone received the news of the suspension from Joe Torre, Chief Baseball Officer for MLB — a call Boone expected.

“Yeah, I knew I made contact with my hat and [Miller] said it right when it happened,’’ Boone said before the Yankees opened their three-game series with bench coach Josh Bard serving as manager. “That happened to me last year. I figured I’d be getting a call at some point from Mr. Torre and I did.”

Boone was unsure whether he would have gotten the ban if he hadn’t made contact with Miller.

“Maybe,’’ Boone said. “Obviously, the [microphones] pick things up pretty well. It’s probably something we should contain. It was like I was miked up.”

And despite his “savage” tirade, Boone isn’t ready for robot umps.

“I don’t know,’’ Boone said when asked about whether he was in favor of replacing umpires.

“I’d have to see how that looks and if that’s viable,’’ Boone said. “By and large, our umpires do a really good job and have a very difficult job, for that matter.”

Boone also praised Miller’s behavior during his rant.

“Brennan, I thought, certainly handled the situation with a lot more class than I did,’’ Boone said. “But also, I thought, turned in a really good game.”

Though Boone said he regretted some of the language he used — and that it was heard so clearly — he doesn’t intend to completely hold back in the future.

“You live and you learn,’’ Boone said. “Hopefully, I don’t change too much. … We’re playing for a lot and I’m gonna be myself.”
