Florida man in sick shark-dragging video gets 10 days jail

A Florida man who helped drag a shark to its death while it was tied to the back of a speedboat was jailed for 10 days — all of which can be served on weekends, according to reports.

Robert Lee “Bo” Benac III, 30, was one of three men who filmed themselves laughing as they dragged the shark near near Egmont Key in June 2017 in a video that went viral and saw them accused of “animal lynching.”

The shark died, and other footage soon emerged of the same men shooting at sharks and even pouring alcohol down the throats of fish that were still alive, according to the Bradenton Herald.

Benac initially faced felony charges — but was allowed to plead down to misdemeanor charges of aggravated cruelty to animals and violation of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rules, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

He was sentenced to 10 days in the Hillsborough County jail, all of which can be served over weekends, according to the reports.

Benac, of Bradenton, was also given 11 months of probation and ordered to perform 250 hours of community service ― half of which can be in an animal shelter ― as well as pay a $2,500 fine.

Benac’s attorney, Justin Petredis, admitted they took the last-minute deal because the video had been shared so widely and sparked such outrage.

“That was a worry, that the anger and emotions of the jury would outweigh where we were hoping common sense would take over,” Petredis told the Tampa Bay Times.

Michael Wenzel, 23, who piloted the boat, pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges in exchange for 10 days in jail and probation in a similar plea deal in May last year, according to the paper.

Charges were dropped against the third man, Spencer Heintz, 23, last May.
