Agartala/Bhubaneswar: As many as 100 students and teachers from Odisha levelled allegations of physical torture by other some students at Agartala-based Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan on Wednesday.

According to sources, around 90 students of the deemed university have complained that they were thrashed by their other mates as they did not participate during a recent strike following some dispute during Ganesh Puja celebrations. Not only that, as many as 10 teachers from Odisha also alleged that they have been targeted over the matter as well.

Though the Vice Chancellor of the institute was informed about the matter on September 20, the authorities are yet to take any action, they alleged.

On the other hand, comments from the authorities of the deemed varsity could not be obtained despite repeated attempts.

Meanwhile, citing concerns over the matter, former Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda has sought Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb’s urgent intervention into the matter.

In a tweet message, Panda shared a video of the students and wrote, "This group of B.Ed students from my state have complained of harassment & physical assault in Tripura, and are pleading to be immediately sent back to Odisha. Please see the video: they look very scared. Please help.

Odisha DGP has also assured help to the Odia students who alleged torture at the institute. In a tweet message, DGP RP Sharma stated that he spoke with DGP Tripura and is closely monitoring the situation.


The Department of Higher Education also tweeted about the matter:

Meanwhile, assuring help in response to former MP Jay Panda's request for intervention into the issue, Tripura Police stated, "Authorities and Tripura State Leadership have taken note of the matter and are in process of assisting the students in this matter"

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also said that he has spoken to Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb and said that Tripura govt has assured full protection and safety to Odia students.

Later, Tripura CM tweeted "Students from Odisha are Tripura's children too. No anti-social activities shall be allowed on the land of Ma Tripursundari. I assure full protection for students from across India in #Tripura. I assure full safety for #Odisha students."

Gaurpriya Das, Lecturer, Sri Jagannath Sanskrit University, Puri, said “The torture of Odia students by the local residents in Agartala is disconcerting. Our central team has left for Agartala and will conduct a detailed investigation into the matter.”
