Patient’s death sparks tension in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Palpable tension prevailed on Mayfair-Jaydev Vihar road in the capital city today as locals and family members of a woman who died at the ESI Hospital while undergoing treatment blocked the road alleging medical negligence.

The family members of the woman alleged that doctors did not treat her properly which led to her death.Demanding stringent action against the hospital staff, they placed her dead body on the road and staged a dharna in front of the hospital gate.

After being informed, police and local administrative officials reached the spot and assured to look into their demands.

According to sources,Ahalya Bhanja of Salia Sahi was admitted to the hospital at 8 am on Wednesday for treatment of asthma, but doctors did not attend her till 12 noon. Although doctors asked her family members to shift her to any other hospital, they did not refer her. Later that night, she died.

“When I asked the hospital staff in the evening about the reason behind the delay in referring her to other hospital, they misbehaved with us,” a relative of the deceased woman said.

Meanwhile, hospital authorities were not available for comments on the matter.
