Heavy rain moving into Oklahoma City Sunday

Staff report

A tornado warning was issued for parts of Kingfisher and Canadian counties Sunday afternoon, and overnight storms left power outages and damage in central Oklahoma.

The warning expired at 2:45 p.m., but a severe thunderstorm warning remained in effect through the afternoon, the National Weather Service reported.

Possible tornadoes were reported near Okarche, and sirens sounded in El Reno where people sought shelter as they were attending a fundraiser concert for May 25 tornado victims at the Denny Crump Rodeo Arena on N Country Club Drive.

At 2:45 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was 6 miles northeast of Geary, moving south at 25 mph. This storm had previously produced a small, weak tornado, the weather service reported

Severe weather with high winds was reported in the Watonga area Sunday afternoon.

Late Saturday and early Sunday, a line of thunderstorms that moved across western, central and eastern parts of Oklahoma overnight left power outages and downed trees and power lines.

Michael Galloway, Custer County emergency management director, said power lines went down Saturday night in Arapaho and Weatherford rural areas. A tornado apparently touched down, he said.

U.S 183 was closed for two hours with power lines across the highway, he said. Several county roads closed due to large trees down.

A roof was blown off a structure south of Putnam in Custer County.

Custer County crews and street crews Sunday morning were busy collecting and clearing roads. There were about 1,500 outages reported around Clinton and Arapaho. Crews worked through the night to restore power to the area, Galloway said.

A tornado warning was issued Saturday night in Custer and in Lincoln counties early Sunday as severe storms moved eastward.

County road E 990, Arapaho Road, east of Arapaho from the railroad tracks to the Beaver Creek bridge in Custer County, was closed Sunday morning due to flooding, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

At one point Sunday morning, 6,332 outages were reported by Oklahoma Gas & Electric Company, according to the company website. Of those, 2,284 outages were in Muskogee. Also, 2,039 customers of Oklahoma electric cooperatives were without power from western to eastern parts of the state.

In Lincoln County, a possible tornado touched down in the southwest part of the county. There was a lot of tree damage from straight-line winds, county emergency management reported.

Outages also were reported Sunday in Oklahoma City, Midwest City and Shawnee. A road in Mustang along State Highway 152 was shut down due to high water Sunday afternoon.
