Sean Kato Wins Washington State Amateur

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. Oregon State rising junior men's golfer Sean Kato won the 120-player Washington State Amateur on Thursday.
 
Kato, a native of Redmond, Wash., finished the three-day event with a 9-under 65-69-73--207 at the par-72 Chambers Bay Golf Course to win by a stroke over Brian Humphreys.
 
He had 16 birdies over the three rounds with eight of them coming Tuesday when he shot a 7-under 65. He birdied two of the last three holes Thursday to secure the win.
 
Kato had a scoring average of 73.10 this past season before it was canceled after three spring tournaments due to COVID-19. He had a scoring average of 72.84 in 37 rounds in 2018-19 to earn a spot on the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team.
 
His best finish as a Beaver is a tie for fifth place at the Oregon State Invitational this past fall. His best collegiate score is a 6-under 66 as a freshman during the second round of the El Macero Classic.
