California Coronavirus: Live Updates On Reopening, Orders, Cases

Here's a roundup of all the coronavirus developments in California as of June 7.

CALIFORNIA — The coronavirus, relegated this week to a second-tier news story, continues to infect people across California, even as cases have slowed and the state takes more significant steps toward a full reopening.

Entering the weekend, more than 126,000 coronavirus cases had been confirmed in California, including more than 4,500 residents who died after contracting COVID-19. Still, the state announced Friday that higher-risk businesses like gyms, bars and professional sports could reopen with modifications as early as next week.

The reopening, at the forefront of most Californians' minds until recently, has been overshadowed as the state's attention turned abruptly to ongoing protests against police violence, triggered by the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25.

It is not yet clear how the virus outbreak will be affected by the protests, which have included large public gatherings in nearly all major cities across the U.S. Some officials, though, have expressed fears that the demonstrations could cause a resurgence in virus cases, after months of social distancing practices went out the window in a matter of days.

In a news conference Monday afternoon, Newsom encouraged people who have participated in protests to get tested for the coronavirus, noting that 67,000 were tested Sunday even as protests raged throughout the state.

That may be more of a challenge in some areas, however, like in Los Angeles County, where more than a dozen testing sites shut down Monday due to the unrest.
