Westport, CT – Director of the Department of Human Services Elaine Daignault announced today that The Westport Mentor Program will be hosting a Breakfast Open House on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 from 9:00am – 10:30am at Westport Town Hall, Conference Room 201. The Open House is for current mentors in addition to community members interested in volunteering their time towards this most rewarding program. Daignault is urging Westport’s residents to become involved in a young person’s life by volunteering as little as 45 minutes a week as a mentor.

Established in 1992 by the Westport Department of Human Services in cooperation with the school system, Westport Mentor Program is a school-based program where individuals from the community meet for approximately 45 minutes per week, on school grounds, during the school year, to offer friendship, support and a non-judgmental ear. It is available for students K-12.

A mentor establishes a one-on-one relationship with the student by acting as a friend, guide, and role model. The goal of the program is to build a child’s self-esteem and develop positive relationships in school, at home, and in the community. Some mentoring relationships have lasted beyond high school graduation into adulthood, providing lifelong benefits to both the mentors and mentees.

Ms. Daignault said, “We have a committed group of over 25 mentors here in town, but unfortunately, we have several students awaiting mentors. This program is a wonderful way to give back and often just as rewarding for the mentor as it is for the mentee.”

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact Annette D’Augelli at 203-341-1183 or via email at adaugelli@westportct.gov. A potential mentor will be asked to complete the necessary paperwork that includes a background check and short training session prior to being matched with a student.
