Westport Author Releases Debut Book, Donates Proceeds to Save the Children

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (June 1, 2020) – Westport, Connecticut resident Caroline C. Barney makes her debut as author today with the release of The Trebors, an epic adventure novel designed for middle grade readers.

A mother of two children and a former advertising professional, Barney has been sneaking in hours wherever she could to write and create this story about a race of creatures that have established a civilization in an enormous, mysterious tree that has been shaken by a powerful storm. Published by TouchPoint Press and available for sale on Amazon.com, The Trebors brings to life the power of community as the characters grapple with something larger than themselves.

“I wrote the first draft of this book four years ago and am in awe by how timely its release is to help children frame what is happening around them during this unprecedented time,” said Barney. “If we are going to fight the devastating impact of COVID-19 we have to do it TOGETHER. Helping our children understand why they are being asked to stay home and not take part in their regular lives is an important part of this process. If we frame what is happening now properly for our children, we have an opportunity to raise the next generation to think of others, to care for the collective, and to lean into the power of being with each other, working for a better world.”

Fitting with the themes of her book, Barney has decided to donate 50 percent of the proceeds of The Trebors to Fairfield-based Save the Children, an organization that the author says has been a part of her life and close to heart for as long as she can remember. Her mother worked for Save the Children during her childhood; in college Barney interned for the organization and visited a field office in Cameroon while studying abroad, and recently the author worked with the nonprofit as a freelance writer.

“To be able to give back to Save the Children, an organization that has been a part of my life for so many years, is an absolute privilege,” said Barney, who has also contributed to the organization through its child sponsorship program for more than 20 years.

The release of Barney’s book, The Trebors, today also coincides with the launch of Save the Children’s second annual summer reading campaign in the United States – Read a Story, Change Their Story. The 100-day campaign aims to curb summer learning loss while providing support and resources for kids growing up in rural America.

100 Days of Reading encourages all children, parents, teachers, librarians, caregivers and adults to log their summer reading minutes at SavetheChildren.org/READ today through September 8, which also marks World Literacy Day. Participants can positively impact the lives of children growing up in rural America who do not have adequate access to early education or children’s books, while also promoting literacy in all communities. Every minute logged helps raise awareness and supports Save the Children’s work to improve literacy and change lives.
