FRANKFORT, IL — The Frankfort Park District has decided to postpone its planned back-to-school bash event scheduled for Aug. 14. The park district said it was going to hold a modified version of the event, and preregistration was required to help with social distancing.

"The large outdoor park space provided for the event allowed for social distancing. However, given the recent situation with the unsanctioned Lincoln-Way East Prom event that was held and was linked to a COVID exposure, the Park District felt postponing the events is the responsible action to take," the park district said in a release.

When Frankfort Patch shared the event on its Facebook page, it received dozens of comments questioning why such an event was being held.

"This sounds like a terrible idea. Why even take the risk?" one comment read.

"The event title of 'Back-to-School-Bash' may have insinuated that there would be a large attendance at the event, however the event was pre-registration with a limit of 35 people. The Park District understands that there is a desire for families and kids to have recreational opportunities," the park district said in a release. "However, with School District 157-C set to return to in-class learning later this month, the park district wants to do our part to ensure the reopening of schools has the best start with healthy students and staff."

The park district thanked its sponsors who support its events, including Culver's, Freddy's, Riverside Healthcare, Bryles Research, Town Center Bank and Old Plank Trail Bank.
