NORTHBROOK, IL — The following information comes from the Northbrook Police Department as a record of incidents reported to the police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A White Mountain Drive resident reported around noon on Aug. 23 that they had gotten a call from a collection agency about a past due amount on a cellular bill for a purchase they never made. The resident also learned there had been an unauthorized credit inquiry.
  • A Cobblewood Drive resident reported on the afternoon of Sept. 11 that they discovered someone had used their credit information to obtain an unauthorized car loan.

BICYCLE THEFT
Someone stole a bicycle from the 1400 block of Shermer Road at some point prior to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 23. Police did not specify if the bike was locked.

SHOPLIFTING

  • Staff at the Mariano's, 784 Skokie Blvd., reported around 7:45 p.m. Aug. 21 that two women were seen stealing unspecified "items from the liquor department."
  • An employee at the Walgreens, 1050 Waukegan Road, reported around 7 p.m. that a man was seek putting several unspecified items into a bag before leaving without paying.
  • Four female shoplifters fled the Nordstrom Rack, 199 Skokie Blvd., after activating security alarms prior to 8:45 p.m. Sept. 5.
  • Three female shoplifters stole several purses from the Bloomingdale's Outlet, 145 Skokie Blvd., after cutting their security cords at some point prior to noon on Sept. 8.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A Southbridge Lane resident reported on the evening of Aug. 28 that someone had used their credit card at several locations without authorization.

THEFT FROM ACCOUNT
A Hillside Drive resident reported on the afternoon of Aug. 29 that some money had gone missing from a bank account.

THEFT FROM SHOPPER
A patron of Whole Foods, 840 Willow Road, reported around 8 p.m. Aug. 29 that someone stole their wallet from a shopping cart. The shopper reported that when they reported the loss they were told the credit cards had been used at several local establishments.

FRAUD
Several unauthorized checks for eBay transactions were issued from an account of a person in the 3400 block of Dundee Road prior to the morning of Aug. 30.

CARD THEFT
A resident in the 200 block of Skokie Boulevard reported around 3:15 p.m. Aug. 30 that someone had taken their ATM card and used it without permission to make several purchases.

WHEEL THEFT
Someone stole four wheels from a vehicle parked in the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard between 6 p.m Aug. 30 and 10 a.m. Aug. 31.

HOME BURGLARIES

  • A resident in the 2200 block of Maple Avenue reported around 6 a.m. Sept. 3 that they discovered a burglar upstairs in their house after hearing their dog barking. The unidentified intruder fled after the resident spotted him and nothing was reported stolen at the time of the report.
  • A resident in the 2400 block of Farnsworth Lane reported on the afternoon of Sept. 9 that someone had broken a glass door, ransacked their home and apparently gotten into a safe. Police said it was not known what may have been stolen at the time of the report.

BURGLARY
Someone in the 1300 block of Shermer Road reported around 11 a.m. Sept. 4 that a bag normally used for bank deposits was missing from a desk drawer. The bag had been seen at the end of the week.

PHONE SCAM
A Farnsworth Lane resident reported around 6:45 p.m. Sept. 4 that they had gotten a phone call from someone claiming they could lower their interest rate. The resident provided some financial information to the caller and later learned of an unauthorized withdrawal of cash from one of their accounts.

CRAIGSLIST SCAM ATTEMPT
An Oxford Lane resident reported around 7:50 p.m. Sept. 4 that someone had tried to scam them by offering above the asking price for an item being listed for sale on Craiglist and asking for a refund of the difference.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • Someone kicked and damaged a sign at the Techny Prairie Nature Walk sometime prior to the morning of Sept. 5.
  • A resident in the 800 block of Bittersweet Drive reported around noon on Sept. 16 that someone had damaged an address post at the end of their driveway.
  • A resident in the 600 block of Midfield Lane reported around 11:15 p.m. Sept. 16 that someone had damaged their grass with a car.

EMAIL SCAM ATTEMPT
A Picardy Drive resident reported on the morning of Sept. 6 that someone had sent them an email asking for a wire transfer that they recognized to be a scam.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone stole a backpack containing a laptop and a drone from a parked vehicle in the 2500 block of Windsor Lane between 9 p.m. Sept. 6 and 10:30 a.m. Sept 7. Police did not specify whether the car was thought to have been unlocked.

HOME BURGLARY ATTEMPT
A resident in the 2400 block of Seville Circle reported on the morning of Sept. 10 that it appeared someone had tried to break into their house and damaged a door and lock. It did not appear they made it inside or stole anything.

UNLAWFUL USE OF CREDIT CARD
Someone unsuccessfully tried to use two credit cards belonging to someone else at the Northbrook Court Apple Store around 4:30 p.m. Sept. 10.

PHONE SCAM
A Somerset Lane resident reported on the afternoon of Sept. 11 that they got a call from someone claiming to be a friend of a friend who convinced them to send funds to a person in Mississippi before learning it was a scam.

ASSAULT
A person reported seeing two men trying to burglarize a work van in the 1800 block of Janke Drive at 2:23 p.m. Sept. 12. The person told police they confronted the suspects and that one of them may have had a weapon. The suspects fled in a car and school officials initiated soft lockdown procedures at two nearby schools.

COMMERCIAL BURGLARY
Police were dispatched to Smart Jewelers, 936 Willow Road, where a burglar alarm had been activated. Officers found exterior and interior windows broken, as well as display cases. A store representative told police it appeared burglars had stolen samples.

GIFT CARD SCAM
A caller purporting to represent a utility company scammed a victim on Willow Road out of $500 after claiming a bill was delinquent and demanding the purchase of a prepaid gift card.

FORGERY
Someone wrote an unauthorized check from an account of a person in the 2800 block of Dundee Road prior to 3 p.m. Sept. 19.

ARRESTS

Fredrick L. Simmons, 41, of the 5600 block of Heard Street in Jackson, Mississippi, was arrested around 8 pm. Aug. 22 in the 900 block of Shermer Road on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in an Alabama court by officers dispatched to a report of an unwanted solicitor selling magazines without a permit required by the village.

A 25-year-old Waukegan man was arrested around 11:45 a.m. Aug. 23 in the area of Dundee and Portwine roads and charged with driving with a suspended license and warned for driving an overweight vehicle.

Samantha M. Corbin, 29, of the 1800 block of Stockton Drive, Hoffman Estates, was arrested around 9 a.m. in the first block of Skokie Boulevard and charged with five counts of identity theft in connection with a case initially reported on April 10.

Christopher Cervantez, 34, of the 1000 block of Hawkinson Avenue, Galesburg, was arrested around 12:45 a.m. Aug. 24 in the area of Willow Road and Patriot Boulevard and charged with driving under the influence. He was also issued citations for improper lane usage, failure to signal and no insurance.

Jonathan Urbano, 22, of the first block of North Branch Road, Northfield, was arrested around 11 p.m. Aug. 26 in the area of Willow and Landwehr roads and charged with DUI. He was also issued a citation for speeding.

Jairus J. Carpenter, 22, of the 700 block of South McAree Road, Waukegan, turned himself in around 8:30 a.m. Aug. 28 to face one count of misdemeanor theft in connection with an investigation into an Oct. 16, 2018, report of a theft.

Ronmel A. Rios-Diaz, 24, of the 900 block of South Lincoln Avenue, Waukegan, was arrested around 2:45 p.m. Aug. 28 in the 2500 block of Essex Drive and charged with battery after officers were told he shot a nail at another person using a nail gun while they were working.

Wilson E. Rivera, 36, of the 3100 block of North California Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 2 a.m. Aug. 31 in the area of Willow and Sunset Ridge roads and charged with DUI and issued a speeding ticket.

Jeffrey I. Hertzberg, 36, of the 2700 block of West Melrose Street, Chicago, was arrested around 2:15 a.m. Sept. 2 in the area of Willow Road and Whittier Lane in Northfield and charged with DUI and issued a speeding ticket.

Lauren J. Alexanian, 45, of the first block of Ferndale Road, Deerfield, turned herself in Sept. 3 in connection with a charge of financial exploitation of an elderly person that was originally reported in March.

A 26-year-old Glenview man was arrested around 8 p.m. Sept. 10 in the area of Willow and Shermer Road and charged with driving with a suspended license with expired registration and no insurance.

Stefan Balint, 40, of the first block of Seamist Court in Newport Beach, California, was arrested around 1:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Northbrook Court Apple Store and charged with unlawful possession of a credit card, forgery with intent and possession of a fraudulent ID card after police were called to a report of someone trying to buy two laptops and two iPhones using several credit cards.

Mahvish Khan, 45, of the 6400 block of North Cicero Avenue, Lincolnwood, was arrested around 6:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Northbrook Court Nieman Marcus and charged with retail theft after police were told she stole a dress worth about $700.

A 46-year-old Melrose Park man was arrested around 9:30 p.m. Sept. 17 in the area of Willow Road and Patriot Boulevard and charged with driving with a suspended license and cited for not having insurance or taillights.

Julian A. Gutuerrez, 21, of the 4100 block of North Menard Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 2 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Northbrook Court Finish Line and charged with retail theft after police were told he had carried out fraudulent transactions.
