Mother Of ID'd Richmond Shooting Suspect Made 911 Call

The Indiana State Police said the Richmond school shooting suspect's mother made the initial 911 call to authorities, school officials.

RICHMOND, IN — The Indiana State Police said the Wayne County Coroner's Office has identified the teenage suspect killed during Thursday's incident at Dennis Intermediate School in Richmond, just minutes after the suspect's mother called 911 alerting officials to the imminent danger. The Indiana State Police said preliminary autopsy results indicate 14-year-old Brandon Clegg, of Richmond, died Thursday from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Wayne County Coroner, Ron Stevens.

The Indiana State Police said Clegg's mother, 42-year-old Mary York, also of Richmond, alerted authorities and school officials to the approaching violence at the intermediate school.

Police are emphasizing the result of the advance notification from York. ISP said the school was able to initiate their lock down procedure which in turn prevented injury to students and faculty, even though the suspect was able to get inside. The intermediate school serves students in grades 5 to 8 in the east central Indiana district.

ISP said their members and local law enforcement agencies are still investigating what led to the incident at the school, located at 222 NW 7th St.

Shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday, the Richmond Police Department dispatch center alerted area law enforcement agencies of the potential incident at the school, leading officers to respond to the building that had been placed on lock down, according to ISP.

A release from ISP said officers confronted the teenage suspect outside the school, who had shot out the glass of a locked school entry door and ran inside. That's where police said the suspect and officers fired shots back and forth before the teen turned the gun on himself.

Information regarding the location of the gunshot wound is not being released at this time, police said, adding there's no indication that Clegg suffered any other gunshot wounds or trauma.

Patch will continue updating this story as information from the ongoing investigation is released.
