105-Degree Heat: Timeline For Severe Maryland Weather

Heat will bake most of Maryland, prompting alerts in three communities. Here's when it will feel like 100+ degrees and when storms may hit.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — At least two Maryland counties and the city of Baltimore have issued alerts Monday, Aug. 19, as dangerous heat bakes the state, with a high temperature in the afternoon expected to feel like 105 degrees. The Baltimore health commissioner has issued a code red extreme heat alert for Monday, and Montgomery County has issued a hyperthermia alert. Anne Arundel County also has cooling centers open, and has issued an animal alerturging pet owners to bring their animals indoors to stay cool.

Temperatures may feel like 105 at the hottest time of day in the Baltimore area on Monday, based on the forecast from the National Weather Service. The heat index incorporates the actual temperature and humidity to determine how hot it will feel like it is outside.

It will feel hotter than 100 degrees between noon and 7 p.m. in much of Maryland, with the peak of the heat expected to hit from 2 to 5 p.m. when it should feel like 100 degrees or more in the region. And it doesn't cool off much overnight. The low on Tuesday morning will be 78 degrees.

Also, a hazardous weather outlook is in place for the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay, Tidal Potomac River, and adjacent counties in central Maryland. A thunderstorm may produce gusty winds on the waters Monday into the evening. Thunderstorms may produce isolated damaging wind gusts and isolated instances of flooding on Tuesday.
