About 900 MD Jobs Will Be Gone By End Of 2018

Several Maryland companies have announced layoffs that will take effect just before or after the New Year. Here's the breakdown.

The New Year is usually a time for optimism, a fresh start and new goals, but for some in Maryland it will unfortunately mean layoffs. Several companies have announced that workers would lose their jobs before the start of 2019 or at some point during the new year because of downsizing or company closures. There are more than 900 scheduled layoffs set for that timeframe with most taking place just before or after the start of 2019.

Among some of the biggest layoffs are General Dynamics in Rockville with 122 layoffs, Crothall Healthcare Laundry Facility in Belcamp with 152 and Sodexo at McDaniel College in Westminster with 107, as the college changes food service vendor to AVI Foodsystems. Current hourly food service employees can apply for jobs with AVI Foodsystems. Kmart, a part of Sears which recently declared bankruptcy after years of financial challenges, is set to shed 188 positions when its Frederick and Oxon Hill stores close at the end of the year.

Maryland added 10,700 jobs in October, the second highest gain since October 2015, according to the latest data from the state Department of Labor. Compared with this time last year, Maryland jobs are up by 38,500, for an over-the-year change of 1.4 percent. The state’s unemployment rate has now fallen to 4.1 percent.. he job growth rate was 1.3 percent over the year and the October unemployment rate was 4.2 percent.
