ANNAPOLIS, MD — Droves of athletes from across the country and even overseas turn out for the Ironman Maryland held in the fall. This year's event, scheduled for Sept. 28 in Cambridge, has caught the eye of local athlete and single mom Courtney Smith.

Smith grew up in Severna Park and lived in downtown Annapolis for years. But it wasn't until this year that she decided she wanted to complete two short-distance triathlons, she told Patch.

"There's a joke that everyone gets into triathlons for a reasons and I was no different," she said.

Her first triathlon took place in Severna Park where she placed second in her age group. Motivated to push on, she has since completed a total of six races this year alone and recently returned home from competing in the USA Triathlon Nationals for the Olympic Distance in Cleveland, Ohio.

"It was an amazing experience and I got to compete against athletes who will be attending the World Championship next year in Canada," she said.

While Smith shares similarities with many of the other triathletes out there, one thing does set her apart, which is why she decided to share her story with Patch.

"I am a full-time single mom to a special needs child and a Maryland business owner, so finding the time to train and do triathlons is a struggle. I am signed up for Ironman Maryland in September and plan to do it in honor of my son. I know there are other single parents out there doing amazing things, too, and I just wanted to share my story," Smith said.

Even more amazing is that Smith's seven-year-old son will be participating in his first kid's triathlon in September in Severna Park with Mom cheering him on the entire time. The Karen Stevens Memorial Kids Triathlon will be held in Severna Park Saturday, Sept. 21. All proceeds from the event goes toward providing free swim lessons for children with special needs.
