Hate Crime Unfolds In Annapolis, Officers Investigate

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Hate crimes aren't commonly reported in Annapolis, but on Jan. 4, two parked vehicles along Primrose Road in the 900 block had a swastika scratched into their sides. The vehicles were owned by different people who reported the incident to police.
Sgt. Amy Miguez with the Annapolis Police Department told Patch that in 2019, officers received no reports of hate crimes occurring in Annapolis. The department isn't sure if the particular vehicles in the Jan. 4 incident were targeted or not. It helps, however, that the youth in the community are educated about hate crimes that officials hope carries over into adulthood to help keep such incidents at bay.
"The schools educate about acceptance and inclusion many ways including through their Global Community Citizenship course and initiatives like Unity Day. We visit elementary schools and speak to kids about our careers and for the Character Counts program, which teaches the six pillars of character," Miguez told Patch.
