Homeless Person's Fire Started Annapolis House Blaze: Officials

A homeless person inhaling vapors from a can accidentally started a blaze in a vacant Annapolis house, officials said.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — A homeless person getting high near a fire in a vacant house caused a blaze that caused serious damage to the building, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department said Friday. The house fire happened just before 7 p.m. on Jan. 5 at 927 Bay Ridge Road.

In a news release, the fire department said investigators determined the fire was an accident, and started by a homeless person abusing inhalants (commonly called “huffing”). A nearby warming fire burning in the house accidentally ignited the vapors from an aerosol can, and flames spread throughout the one-and-a-half story house.

Crews from the Annapolis Fire Department and United States Naval Academy Fire Department helped fight the fire, which was reported by a passerby.
