More MD Cases In Salmonella Outbreak Linked To Raw Turkey

MARYLAND — At least 63 more illnesses have been confirmed due to a salmonella outbreak that federal health officials have linked to raw turkey products. The new illnesses — which include four Maryland cases — were added to the list since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's last update on Dec. 21.

In total, 279 people have become infected with salmonella in 41 states and the District of Columbia as of Feb. 13. At least one person has died and 107 people have been hospitalized, officials said.
The raw turkey products making people sick have come from a variety of sources, the CDC says.

Ill people have reported eating different types and brands of turkey products and at least four ill people lived in homes where raw turkey pet food was given to pets.

The CDC said a single, common supplier of raw turkey products or live turkeys who could account for the whole outbreak has not been identified.

In mid-November 2018, three salmonella cases were confirmed in Maryland; the total has now climbed to seven, the CDC says.

Below are all the recalls associated with the outbreak:

• On January 28, 2019, Woody's Pet Food Deli in Minnesotarecalled raw turkey pet food. The recalled product was sold in 5-pound plastic containers labeled "Woody's Pet Food Deli Raw Free Range Turkey" and was sold in Minnesota.
• On December 21, 2018, Jennie O Turkey Store Sales, LLC, in Faribault, Minnesota recalled about 164,210 pounds of raw ground turkey products. The recalled ground turkey was sold in 1-pound, 2.5-pound and 3-pound packages labeled with establishment number "P-579". This is found on the side of the product tray package.

• On November 15, 2018, Jennie-O Turkey Store Sales, LLC, in Barron, Wisconsin recalled about 147,276 pounds of raw ground turkey products. The recalled ground turkey was sold in one-pound packages labeled with establishment number "P-190". This is found inside the USDA mark of inspection.
• On February 5, 2018, Raws for Paws of Minneapolis, MN recalled approximately 4,000 pounds of its 5 pounds and 1 pound chubs of Ground Turkey Pet Food.
