ANNAPOLIS, MD — In an effort to keep motorists' line of sight clear and not cause difficult for individuals navigating city sidewalks, the Annapolis City Council passed an ordinance recently to strengthen the rules related to sidewalk signage. Sidewalk signs are only legal with appropriate permits, but the sidewalk sign permit fee has been waived until Nov. 11.

The ordinance change allows the city to revoke an existing permit if a sign creates an obstruction for pedestrians or vehicular traffic, or cause a disruption to safety or visibility. The bill, which was sponsored by Ward One Alderwoman Eleanor Tierney and Ward Five Alderman Marc Rodriguez, was created after residents complained about sidewalk signs that were an issue.

“We love the signs and the excitement they create,” said Alderwoman Tierney in a statement. “But as public sidewalks needing to be handicap-accessible, we needed to think about safety. Existing businesses will be waived the one-time only fee so we’re making it as easy as possible to comply.”
