SALEM, MA — Sarah Starion, who captained the Salem High School volleyball team in 2016, died Thursday. She was 21.

A cause of death was not released, but a post on the Salem High School volleyball team's Facebook page implied Starion's death was unexpected. Starion, who was called "Sas" by her coaches and teammates, played varsity volleyball for three years and captained the team in her senior year. She was also named a scholar athlete in 2015 and named a Northeastern Conference All-Star in 2016.

"Every time Sas entered the Field House, her goofiness and joy commanded the attention of teammates and coaches alike," the Facebook post said. "Sas was a phenomenal leader whose passion and humor fueled her game and inspired others."
