Salem Man Held In Armed Theft Of $470 Sweatshirt

Police say the victim was forced to turn over A Bathing Ape sweatshirt when he accepted a ride from Thomas Elwell, 26, of Salem.

SALEM, MA -- A 26-year-old Salem man is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing after being accused of stealing a $470 sweatshirt at knife point. Police say Thomas Elwell, 26, of 46 Bartholomew Street in Salem, offered two people a ride on Oct. 5 and then made one of the passengers turn over the A Bathing Ape sweatshirt he was wearing.

A Bathing Ape, or BAPE, is a Japanese clothing brand that makes men's and women's street wear. The company has increased its profile in the U.S. in recent years by partnering with video game makers to promote the brand and offer clothing prizes to players.

Elwell will be in court Oct. 23 for the hearing.
