The second federal holiday of 2020 is upon us. Here's what's going to be open and what's going to be closed in our area on Monday.

SALEM, MA — Monday is Martin Luther King Day, a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January. It celebrates the life and achievements of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. State and federal offices close in observance of the holiday, while retail stores and most other businesses are generally open.

Here's a look at what's open and what's closed on Monday, Jan. 20:

  • Retail stores: Open.
  • Liquor stores: Open.
  • Supermarkets: Open.
  • Convenience stores: Open.
  • Taverns, bars: Open.
  • Banks: Closed.
  • Stock market: Closed.
  • Municipal, state, federal offices: Closed.
  • Libraries: Closed.
  • Schools: Closed.
  • Mail: Post offices closed; express delivery only.
  • MBTA: Subways, and buses on Saturday schedule. Silver Line, commuter rail, and Hingham and Charlestown commuter boats on weekday schedule. The Ride on Saturday schedule. For more information, call 617-222-3200.
  • Trash Collection: Delayed one day (Monday picked up on Tuesday, Tuesday picked up on Wednesday, Wednesday picked up on Thursday, Thursday picked up on Friday and Friday picked up on Saturday).
