SALEM, MA —Fourth of July is slated to look different this year due to the ongoing pandemic. Salem's fireworks and many other celebrations are cancelled, leaving residents to find ways to celebrate at home. But one thing we can count on is a scheduled holiday.

Because July 4 falls on a Saturday, the Independence Day holiday is observed on Friday, July 3. Government offices will be closed, and other services will have schedule changes.
Many services are already affected by the pandemic. Here are the openings and closings to know around the holiday:

  • Despite the observed holiday on Friday, there will be no change to the trash collection schedule.
  • Retail stores: Open at owner's discretion.
  • Liquor stores: Open.
  • Supermarkets: Open.
  • Convenience stores: Open.
  • Taverns, bars: Open.
  • Banks: Closed.
  • Libraries: Closed.
  • Stock market: Closed.
  • Municipal, state, federal offices: Closed.
  • Mail: Post offices closed; express delivery only.
  • MBTA: On Friday, subways and ferries will run on a weekday schedule, while buses and commuter rail will run on a Saturday schedule. On Saturday, subways and commuter rail will run on a Saturday schedule, while buses will run on a Sunday schedule.
