STOUGHTON, MA — Two baby deer were trapped in a back yard Saturday afternoon. Animal Control wasn't available, so Fire Lt. Gregory Goldberg stepped up and freed the fawns.

Just after noon, a man came into the fire station and told Goldberg two baby deer were trapped in his neighbor's back yard on Pearl Street across from the old Stoughton High School. He told Goldberg the deer couldn't find their way out of the yard and had repeatedly thrown their bodies against a chain link fence in an attempt to free themselves. Goldberg found the two fawns trapped and suffering from trauma, fire officials said.

Goldberg, the neighbors and a bystander spent about 15 minutes trying to corral the deer towards the driveway opening at the front of the property. They were able to lead one fawn out, but the other became stressed and exhausted.

At that point, it was decided to let the deer rest and find its way back to nature. After returning to the fire station, Goldberg spoke with firefigther Peter Denneno, who has some knowledge of animals, and they decided to try once more to rescue the fawn.

Fire officals said they were able to get the baby deer to the back corner of the yard. Then Lt. Michael Carrol picked it up and placed it over the fence. The deer disappeared into the woods.
