Mother Nature's annual color display has pretty much vanished thanks to the wind and rain that has soaked the area over the last day or so. However, this is Concord, New Hampshire and there is always something else just around the corner. Even better - it's FREE!

After having what is known in the trade as a "soft opening" some months back, the former Concord Theatre, now illuminating South Main Street as Bank of New Hampshire Stage, will be having its "Grand Opening" this weekend. While some of the events are private, the shiny, new venue is welcoming the general public for a free Open House this Sunday morning, October 20th, from 10 AM until noon.

You'll be able to tour the venue, enjoy light refreshments and watch a scheduled 10:30 or 11:30 presentation of a dazzling new short film created by the justly celebrated John Gfroerer, telling the history of the building from 1860 until today! While you're there, you might also want to pick-up a brochure or two about all of the upcoming events scheduled for the Bank of New Hampshire Stage this Season.

There are concerts for just about every taste as well as comedy. In addition, there are stunning presentations on-screen from the National Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera as well as the Bolshoi Ballet. I recently attended a National Theatre presentation of "The Audience" starring Helen Mirren. I was slack-jawed through much of it because the HD presentation was so amazing in both sound and picture, almost seeming 3-D, that I felt I was attending a live performance.

Anyone who knows me knows that I was a part of the former Concord Theatre for 27 years. I've shared the storied history of the building in my book, The Concord Theatre and Concord's Love Affair with the Movies.

The question I am most asked by readers of the book is, "What would Theresa Cantin think of the new venue that has been created?" (Theresa was the owner and operator of the theater for many decades).

My response is always, "She'd love it. She would rejoice in the fact that her beloved building is still being used as a place to bring people together and to let them be entertained..."

Why not take an hour out of your Sunday this weekend and check out this dazzling new emporium for the arts. I promise you that it'll be time well-spent.
