Firefighters, Police Called To Merrimack River To Rescue 2

Canterbury police as well as regional firefighters, EMTs, and the Penacook Rescue team were sent to Pebble Beach to rescue two children.

CANTERBURY, NH — Police and area firefighters were sent to Pebble Beach on the Merrimack River in Canterbury for a water rescue, assisting two children Saturday.

Around 6:10 p.m., fire dispatch received a call about the two children distressed in the river. Canterbury police and firefighters, the Penacook Rescue team, and Boscawen firefighters with a boat were first sent to Intervale Road. Later, EMTs from Concord as well as a Concord fire boat were also called to assist.

A few minutes later, dispatch informed the firefighters that one child was out of the water and people on the beach were performing CPR but a second child was still missing.

Concord firefighters launched its boat from the Boscawen side of the river while ambulances and another boat headed to Intervale.

About 15 minutes later, Canterbury police told fire dispatch that the second child was found and was out of the water. A few minutes later, dispatch reported both children were breathing, too. When EMTs arrived, one of the children was not responsive and they were preparing to perform a rapid sequence intubation, to clear the patient's airway of water, according to scanner chatter.

At just before 7 p.m., one patient was taken to Concord Hospital.
