Marine Patrol: Latest Merrimack River Drowning Was A Teenager

Officials are still investigating the latest drowning incident near a conservation area near Oxbow Pond Road in Canterbury.

CONCORD, NH — Marine Patrol announced Sunday that the latest drowning victim along the Merrimack River, this time in Canterbury, was a 15-year-old boy.

The boy was swimming with friends near the conservation area off Oxbow Pond Road.

"While in the water, he began to struggle and nearby witnesses attempted to assist him," Lt. C. McLain of Marine Patrol said. "Before they could reach him, he went under and did not resurface."

Firefighters and EMTs, including rescue boats, from Boscawen, Canterbury, Concord, and Franklin were called to the area to search for the boy. After about an hour and 20 minutes, Concord firefighters found him.

The teen was taken to Concord Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"The incident remains under investigation," McLain said.
