LONDONDERRY, NH — A wrong-way driver traveled the high-speed lane on Interstate 93 from the Massachusetts border all the way to Londonderry — a distance of about 10 miles — before New Hampshire State Police troopers stopped his vehicle early Monday morning. The driver, a Lawrence, Massachusetts, man was charged with felony reckless driving, possession and transportation of narcotics and driving while intoxicated.

Jose Vargas, 30, was bailed and released on Monday. He is due in Rockingham Superior Court April 12.

Police say shortly after midnight they responded to several calls about a wrong-way motorist near the Massachusetts border in Salem. Passing drivers reported the driver was in a dark-colored sport utility vehicle traveling approximately 12 miles through Salem and Windham toward Londonderry.

Troopers approached the area from the north, slowing and stopping vehicles as they approached the wrong-way driver before stopping him just south of Exit 4. Police say the decision was made to stop the driver before he entered a stretch with shoulder barriers on each side of the highway that would have made it extremely difficult to swerve and avoid on oncoming motorist.
