Merrimack Bans All Outside Water Use — Including Washing Cars

All outside water use includes, but is not limited to, the watering of lawns, washing of cars, filling of pools, etc.

(Merrimack, NH Outside Water Ban Effective Immediatly)

MERRIMACK, NH — The Merrimack Village Water District announced on Friday June 19 that a level 3 water restriction was being put in place immediately.

According to Merrimack officials as a result of continued heavy water consumption, the Merrimack Village District (MVD) is implementing a ban on all outside water use effective immediately.

The last 24 days of attempting to limit use of water has not been effective. Due to extremely high usage during the stay at home order and the loss of two wells during construction of the PFAS treatment plant, the outside water ban will be in effect until further notice.

MVD is supplementing our water supply through the purchase of water from Pennichuck Water Works (PWW) at an average of 713,751 gallons per day (gpd). Combined usage for the last 24 days averages 4.1 million gpd compared to an average of 2.5 million gpd in May and June of 2019. Other public water systems are also reporting extremely high usage during the same time frame and implementing water restrictions.

There is no prediction as to when this prohibition of outside water use will be lifted. All outside water use includes, but is not limited to, the watering of lawns, washing of cars, filling of pools, etc. Kiddie pools and the use of watering cans for gardens are acceptable.

Violation of the ban, after receiving a warning, will result in termination of service and a subsequent reconnection fee of $125.00 per MVD Bylaw 2J. MVD personnel will be actively observing violations and issuing warning letters.

This ban is intended for the safety of the water supply and overall fire protection. The public’s cooperation is urgent. Please understand that warnings are given out to make individuals aware of the severity and that MVD employees are simply trying to protect the public water supply by delivering these notices.
