MANCHESTER, NJ — A Manchester Township woman suffered a leg injury Sunday evening when she was hit by a car while trying to cross Route 530, Manchester police said Monday.

Anna Rammos, 82, of Whiting, was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, with injuries to her right leg, Manchester Lt. Vincent Manco said.

She was trying to cross Route 530 in front of Dollar General just before 7:40 p.m. when she was hit by a black 2011 Chevrolet Cruz driven by Waldemar Kurbansade, 73, of Whiting. Rammos was hit in the eastbound lane of Route 530, about 375 feet west of Manchester Boulevard, Manco said.

Kurbansade was driving east at the time. Kurbansade told police he tried to avoid hitting Rammos by braking and swerving, however, he was unable to avoid hitting her with the front bumper of his vehicle. Manco said witnesses and evidence at the scene supported his statement.

It was raining at the time of the crash, Manco said, and the area where the collision occurred was poorly lit.

Rammos was flown via Life Flight Medivac. Also assisting at the scene were Quality Medical Transport personnel and MONOC paramedics.
