Queens Cherry Picker Crash Kills Construction Worker, Cops Say

Jose Polanco, of Woodhaven, died when a box truck crashed into his cherry picker crane while he was in its bucket, said police.

ELMHURST, QUEENS — A construction worker died Thursday when a box truck crashed into his cherry picker and he was thrown from its bucket, police said.

Jose Polanco, 59, was operating the 2014 Ford E350 on Grand Avenue and Goldsmith Street when a 2018 Hino box truck slammed into the crane's bucket about 2:45 a.m., said police.

Polanco, who hurt his head and torso when he hit the pavement, was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital where he later died, police said.

The 56-year-old box truck driver stayed at the crash site and he did not immediately face criminal charges, said police.
