NEW YORK CITY — A hazardous snow storm is headed toward New York City and expected to hit early Wednesday morning, forecasters warned.

The city could get up to three inches of snow between 3 a.m. and 11 a.m., causing slippery conditions and slowing morning commutes, the National Weather Service predicts.

New York City issued a snow alert Tuesday and officials urged commuters to take mass transit during the storm.

"It's going to be a very messy commute in the morning," said Sanitation commissioner Kathryn Garcia. "We hope you won't be driving."

The city has 265,000 tons of salt ready to cover the streets, but Garcia noted Tuesday's warm weather meant snow was unlikely to accumulate.

Garcia also said schools will likely remain open.

Temperatures will hover in the mid-30s with wind chill values between 30 and 35 degrees and winds of up to 10 mph, according to forecasters.

The storm should clear up for a cold Wednesday night with a low of 25 degrees.

This is New York City's second snow fall of the month after a storm hit the week after Thanksgiving.
