Center City Philly, Ben Franklin Bridge Shut Down Indefinitely

PHILADELPHIA, PA — All of Center City has been shut down to vehicular traffic as officials attempt to prepare for further demonstrations Sunday following the death of George Floyd.

The city has closed all streets in Center City from Vine Street to South Street, and from the Delaware River to the Schuylkill River. The closure began at noon on Sunday and is in effect until further notice.

SEPTA bus access to the area will also be restricted. Residents and business owners can continue to access the area.

In addition, a mandatory citywide curfew has been set for 6 p.m. Sunday, in effect through 6 a.m. Monday. Businesses shut down in the afternoon in preparation.

"I’m sure (the riots Saturday) saddened every Philadelphian who takes pride in our city—especially the thousands of Philadelphians who came out earlier in the day yesterday to peacefully yet forcefully protest," Mayor Jim Kenney said Sunday.

Saturday's riots left trash strewn across Center City, several buildings and vehicles on fire, and numerous businesses damaged or destroyed. More than 100 were arrested and 13 police officers were injured.

Protests turned violent early Sunday afternoon as videos from across social media showed looting in the Kensington section and on Aramingo Avenue, as well confrontations with police.
