Philly Pizzeria Is Among The 'World's Greatest Places,' Time Says

PHILADELPHIA — Philly has been getting national attention thanks to its booming food scene, and now it's got some international love thanks to Time Magazine.

Time recently released its list of the 100 greatest places in the world, which is broken out into three categories: places to stay, places to visit, and places to eat.

Among the places to eat was Philly's famous Pizzeria Beddia.

Joe Beddia used to operate in a small Fishtown location, with limited hours and limited pizzas. He closed the small space to open a full-service sit down pizza joint that cranks out Beddia's signature pies without losing the quality from the former location.

There used to be a bare-bones pizzeria in Philadelphia with two employees, zero seats and a 40-pizza-per-night limit. In 2015, Bon Appétit named its pizzas the best in the U.S., citing their “always-crispy-chewy crust.” Less than three years later, however, Pizzeria Beddia had to close: the hours-long lines made the two-man operation unsustainable. “I didn’t want to get to a point where I hated it,” says owner Joe Beddia, describing an atmosphere in which visitors would snap photos of him through the window while they waited in line. Now, Beddia is back with a full-service joint just a few blocks down the road from the original. It’s stocked with 120 seats, dozens more employees and a cloud-shaped light installation that encourages you to linger. “Everything’s changed,” Beddia says, “except the pizza.”

Time listed 19 places to eat among the 100 places. Pizzeria Beddia was one of seven eateries in the United States to make the cut.

"I could think of 100 better places in Philadelphia alone," Beddia said on Instagram. "I will however take the compliment because we have an amazing team that performs and enjoys on the highest level."

Beddia was named the best pizza in Pennsylvania in 2017 by the Daily Meal.
