EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — The graffiti-riddled old Fram building on Pawtucket Avenue, which has been abandoned for more than 20 years, will be demolished starting this week.

The city ordered the demolition after it was determined to be a public safety hazard. City Building Official Robert Walker investigated the building's condition and declared it "a hazardous and unsafe structure" after city officials said transients were found staying inside the building and putting both themselves and the public at risk.

Safety violations included trash, debris, boats and old mattresses left on the property. The two-story, 45-000 square-foot building sits on six acres.

"After decades of neglect and deterioration, I needed to take immediate action and asked our building official to investigate and ultimately remove the structure, which has become a public nuisance in our community and blight on its neighborhood," Mayor Bob DaSilva said.

A temporary fence has been set up around the site with asbestos abatement to be included in the demolition.
