18,000+ Rhode Island Power Outages Amid Thunderstorms

A storm with heavy rain, powerful winds and thunder cut power to thousands across Rhode Island Monday morning and closed several schools and day cares. At 9:45 a.m., there were 18,027 without power across the state, according to National Grid. Power was expected to be restored in most areas before noon.

The storm hit as the Boston Marathon kicked off, making for a cold, wet slog for thousands of runners.

Bristol-Warren public schools, St. Andrew's School in Barrington and Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Bristol canceled classes on Monday due to power outages. Bright beginnings in Warren and Dr. Day Care in Smithfield are closed as well, while Island Child Care Center in Bristol delayed opening until 10:30 a.m. and the Kid's Junction in Barrington opened after power was restored.

The downpours and thunderstorms have ended, but the National Weather Service said showers are possible after 2 p.m. In addition, a high wind advisory will be in place from 3 p.m. Monday until 8 a.m. Tuesday.
