Newport Teen Identified As Victim In Providence Murder

Zachary Medina was visiting his grandmother when he was shot outside her apartment complex. Police said he was an innocent victim.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Police identified the murder victim in Saturday morning's shooting as Zachary Medina, 19, of Newport. A Providence man was also injured in the double shooting.

Medina and Darius Page, 26 of Providence were shot after a gunman ran into a parking lot outside the Lockwood Plaza housing complex at 60 Prairie Avenue a little before 1 a.m. and opened fire, police said.

Police Maj. David Lapatin told the Associated Press Medina was visiting his grandmother and was an “innocent victim." Lapatin was only trying to get in his car when he was shot.

Both men were rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, where Medina died.

Police said they don't have a detailed description of the suspect. He ran away and police don't know the suspect's motive.

Medina is the ninth murder victim in Providence this year.
